For 3 years I have toured around the country and asked cyclists to understand a few curious items about our culture:
A) We US citizens have a history of repressing anything sexual. Maybe it is for the kids, maybe it is for the parents but for whatever reason many people have a hard time accepting sex for anything other than procreation. This wouldn't be a problem on its own, but the culture of shame and silence has yielded us lots of confusion, pain and suffering (in a bad way). Open, honest, mature discussion goes a long way towards overcoming our puritanical history.
B) If we do not define what obscenity is, others will do it for us. Generally I feel mature enough to set my own boundaries. This makes me distrustful of those who would limit my access to ideas or my expression thereof. There are no signs at Wal-Mart telling you that the music you buy there has been filtered by someone you will never meet. I find this form of censorship reprehensible.
C) Bikes are sexy. It's true, riding makes us healthier. But more than having an improved resting heart rate and killer legs, bikes themselves are sexy and the act of cycling is sexy. It could be the freedom we have when traveling under out own power. It could be the attention to detail in those beautiful custom frames. It could be the straining of muscles in rhythmic motions but for whatever reason it is exciting.
After another year of touring North America I have returned with a series of short movies from various artists who chose to create kickass films on the theme, "cycle bound".

Hi there and thanks for joining Zoobird. I noticed Portland has bike realtors now, thanks to your website. Also, the music of Eyes of the Sorcerer, or Ojos de Brujo is phenomenal. We have an indie theater here in Florida called Enzian, FYI. Also, Zoobird member Darren is a local film maker. He does collages of music footage.
So, here's a welcome gift from McRorie Community Garden, an urban mandala! Cheers and stay in touch - hope you invite lots of friends and enjoy this website. There's a place to post videos, by the way, and you may find a creative outlet here in the Bike Zoo or who knows where. Mainly, we hope to read your thoughts and contributions. It makes the site so much fuller if we get content. /Mike
