Soap Making

I've been reading about soap making, but the lye used in many recipes looks like it's not to be trifled with. Is it necessary to use lye? What are some successful recipes? I dropped by Wayward Council in Gainesville and found some hand made soap that turned out to be good. It was easy to tell it was hand made by the irregular design, but it was much better than many commercial soaps.
