Dangerously organic!

Dear friends,

As you know if you read Wednesday's Gainesville Sun, a convicted felon from Lake Butler, who was released from jail a few months ago, despite the fact that he committed 3 homicides in the course of his criminal career, entered Tent City and stabbed two of the residents, one of whom is still in critical condition and has lost one lung. Tent City is located on land privately owned by several different people. As a result of this event, two of the landowners have requested that all homeless people be evicted from the parcels of land they own. GPD is carrying out this eviction, as they must. All residents who are found on these parcels of land next Thursday, June 11, will be arrested.

It would be nice to think that it will end there, but unfortunately that is not guaranteed and is, in fact, somewhat unlikely. There are people in positions of great power and influence who want to see all of Tent City evicted and have the means at their disposal to make this happen.

This will be a catastrophe beyond measure for the many Tent City residents whose only crime is being poor, many of whom are elderly or disabled and do not have the means to put their worldly goods on their backs and seek somewhere else to be.

Jon Decarmine is going to arrange a meeting at Tent City this weekend, for homeless people, advocates, and members of the community, to discuss this situation and possible responses. I will post the exact time and place of this meeting as soon as I have that information.

In the meantime, we have the ongoing disaster of the 130-meal limit at St. Francis House. People with diabetes, pregnant women, the elderly and the disabled are being turned away from lunch at St. Francis House.

We do not have money and power. All we have is public outrage - AND NOW IS THE TIME TO EXPRESS IT. We all know, either from reading history or even from personal experience, the horrors that have been visited upon African-Americans, Japanese-Americans, Jews, Native Americans, the Irish etc. etc. It is the same old story, except now the target of cruelty and oppression are the poor, the mentally ill, the disabled, the old veterans still wounded from the horrors of war. These are the new Untouchables.

If we do not stand up for them, who will?

As I mentioned, I will post the time and place of the meeting at Tent City. In the meantime, to send in a letter to the editor, email to the address I have posted below. Below that email addess I have posted the email addresses of Russ Blackburn, the City Manager, Mayor Hanrahan, and the City Commission, so you can contact them also with your opinions. And spread the word!

Thank you, arupa
