I know now. A friend is someone you can call at 9am on a Sunday morning and say: “one of the cats is dead . . .” And your friend says “I'll be there in 10 minutes.” And he (or she) is there in 5, and digs the hole for you.
I went to feed our cat colonies this morning. Before the evictions, our caretakers would have been feeding the cats in the colonies, watching over them and guarding them. But now our caretakers are evicted and there was no one to know what happened or to call for help.
I fed the Pathway Tribe and then went over to the Tent City Tribe. I fed the group, and noticed that Sunshine Light was missing. I turned around to leave and saw him lying inside what's left of the caretakers' tent, up against the bed where they used to sleep. No, he wasn't breathing . . . flies were gathering. No obvious signs of illness or trauma . . . I covered him with a piece of tenting and called my friend and we buried him.
The recent Tent City evictions have taken a heavy toll on the cats and dogs of Tent City, their caretakers and beyond, as they are chased from one campsite to another. It has taken a great deal of determination and work to hold on to one's pets.
Two dogs were given up for adoption and one is in temporary foster care. Many caretakers have moved so far away that they can't walk their dogs to the field or even downtown to meet the Home Van or to St. Francis Clinic.
We're helping as much as we can as is Melissa Glikes of St. Francis Clinic, but it is very difficult. Dogs are threatened as well as people when the homeless are rousted from campsites. After a particularly traumatic rousting by GPD one dog owner gave away his little dog without letting us know. We have the word out and we're looking for this young dog.
We feed on the run. We want people to know that Home Van Pet Care can be found with the Home Van on Thursdays at 5pm at The Field and at 5:30pm Downtown. This is also where we meet new people and give pet food and pet care information to anyone who comes by. Ann Boches' is there with me and between us we try to see to see what each person needs and wants for their pet.
We need more help for Home Van Pet Care. We've had some medical bills for cats who were rescued during the evictions and we would be grateful for monetary donations to keep our fund going for this purpose. In order to make your contribution tax-deductible, make your check payable to Society of St. Vincent dePaul. Checks can be mailed to E. Howard, P.O. Box 14305, Gainesville FL 32604.
We still need homes for sisters Abby and Duchess, as well as for pretty little Taffy. We also have little Pearl, a special needs kitty. These kitties are safe in foster homes, but we can't keep them forever, so let us know if you can help. We can send photos or arrange a visit if you like.
We need more volunteers to feed the cat colonies, to support pet owners in keeping their pets . . . we think there are some kittens and a mom close by . . . we always need any size bags of cat food, Friskies, Meow Mix and Kit & Kaboodle fishy flavors being the favorites as well as any size fishy canned cat food; we need collars and leashes and any size bags of dog food, Pedigree being the current favorite.
