Mycol Stevens has beautiful lemongrass plants growing at his place, which he calls Finca Mycol. He grabbed a handful and stuffed it in a pot. He lit a wood fire and boiled it in some water we hauled up from his hand dug reservoir. Delicious! Then, we had a stew he made from dried mushrooms, road kill jerky and fresh veg from plants he grows all over the 20 acres, just north of Gainesville, FL. I wrote the visit up on Elephant Journal, in an article called Living off the Grid.

What are you going to plant?
I'm reading "Possum Living", by Dolly Freed which was a popular book in the 70's and just reprinted. Freed suggests thinking about what's most sensible to grow.
For example, she says potatoes are so cheap it's hardly worth sacrificing space to grow them. Dolly says squash is always overplanted and her neighbors give away the extras, so she doesn't grow any. I just weeded my patch after the freezes and plan to plant today:
Even though potatoes are abundant and cheap, it pleased Sh'mal to grow some in his patch, which was covered by leaves and compost. We had lunch one day and he ust reached in and pulled one out:
