Heart Attack

When I lived in Ireland, I woke up one morning and coughed, clutching

my chest. My wife's a cardiologist and she said "That's it. Come on,

we're going to the hospital." And, off we went to merry St. Vincent's in

Ballsbridge.

We checked in at the Emergency Ward and my wife casually mentioned that

she was a doctor, hoping that her status would grease the skids, as it

were.

They wheeled me into the… Continue

Bike of The Day {BOTD} ::: Brompton

Brompton

Today’s {BotD} Bike of the Day is a Brompton folding bike…

Bromptons have been around for years. They’re made in England. I spotted this one at the Hawthorne Hostel in Portland, Oregon. It’s not the first folding bike I’ve seen at the

hostel. Last year, another traveler came on a Dahon he loved so much he

had it chrome plated!…

A Great Day at the Garden

I'm headed up to the garden today. Lots of weeds to pull. I've been away for a while and nature's taken its course.

Save Some Water For The Fishies...Literally

It is an idea that I must have given this Chineese designer Yan Lu in my sleep. Everytime my kids use the faucet for washing or brushing teeth my wife and I always tell them to "save some for the fishies!". We feel (we hope) it instills a sense of connection to the little creatures of the world that we have to look out for and that they naturally have an empathy for.

Now Yan Lu has taken that idea literally and has placed a goldfish...…

Anyone have any experience staying there?

Something to think about...

I had just finished a trip to Brazzaville, Republic of Congo and then Morocco. Came back to NYC, staying on E14th Street at the hostel. It

was a quiet mid-morning on Sunday, I believe. I walked from the hostel to a coffee shop, then to a park.

And, on the way back, I looked up and saw this guy lying…

English as a First Foreign Language

Interesting perspective here. I'm chewing on it. What do you think of the assertions that "not speaking English" is isolating and "English is
becoming the universal language"? See http://www.englishffl.org/

Greetings from the Congo

Parrot in a Tree in Brazzaville, Congo

Hello, Zoobirds!

I'm in Brazzaville and the air is thick with all sorts of diffternt smells. Mycol Stevens could probably identify the fungi growing on the tree I see right now. There is a big trash fire spewing smoke down the road. I hear birds singing, mostly parrots. I haven't eaten yet, for a while now, since it was a… Continue

Not a normal bee day!

(CNN) -- Tuesday was anything but a routine day for Deputy Brandon Jenkins, who spent three hours in his patrol car after nearly 50,000 honeybees decided to park on it.

The Wake County Sheriff's Office officer had responded around 9:40 a.m. to a call of a person possibly being attacked by bees. He found a disabled truck on U.S. 64 a few miles… Continue

A Tribute to Charles Bukowski...on his birthday!

Charles Bukowski. Iconic. Unique, original, prolific. What he wanted to say, he said. He wrote tremendous numbers of stories, poetry, and what he wrote, he wrote without shame,

in a clean, terse style. In fact, his style was the only clean thing

about his writing. He wrote about the track, about women, gambling,

skid row, depression, obsession and cooked up the seedy side of life so

well that despite…
