Father John Gillespie, Director of St. Augustines Church and Catholic Student Center, long-time board member of St. Francis House, and a strong advocate for the homeless and hungry people of Gainesville for many years, is being reassigned to a parish in St. Augustine. He went before
the City Commission many times over the years, strongly supporting the basic
human rights of poor and homeless people, most recently during the ongoing
battle…
We've known all along that constructing green buildings makes sense. So many organizations and consumers recognize this as well as our own city and municipal power plant. Now the Appraisal Institute is recognizing the need for appraisers to understand that there is a real monetary valuation to homes that are not only saving energy and money but also less hazardous for their occupants and better for their communites' environment. Can you believe it's August? It's been a great summer. We still have nearly a whole month until the weather even shows a hint of cooling down. I went through my patch and did some serious weeding before hitting the road last month for the west coast. I predict the collards, cabbage, chives, potatoes, and mint have been culled by Eric, my kimchi making friend. At… Continue

Did you ever see a street person sitting in the esplanade holding a sign looking for change? Maybe the sign said something funny like "Will code for food". Did you give him some change? Was it hard to look at him if you had nothing to give? Did you have a passenger who said "I bet he makes more than you and me in a day"?
I like to think nobody wakes up and says "Boy, I think I'll go begging on the streets today and make a windfall". It's not a choice. People… Continue

This is what a skateboard park designer looks like. And, that board is my new ride! He got a new skateboard and gave that one to me. People in Portland and Gainesville take the long road downhill on these skateboards and make it look easy. Keep your fingers crossed for me. I'll be sure to get a helmet, pads, and be… Continue

I'm staying at Paul's house in Portland, OR. Here's a funny video of his beginning efforts at beekeeping. Have you any beekeeping stories to share? Check out the Bee Zoo here on… Continue
There’s a book called “Finding God in the Garden”, by Balfour Brickner…
You can read (I like it) or you can go outside and discover a few things yourself. What’s a You Pick farm? It’s a farm where you visit and pick your own fruit. There’s a new hostel in Gainesville called “The Zen Hostel”. Owner Tobe Terrell gave me a book…
Honest, honest. This ongoing poem began as I relate in the early stanzas, but I couldn’t stop myself, working on it daily as days unfold. It began just for you, to be shared with Bahira; now I find myself wanting to work on it more and more to keep expanding this mode of sacred telling. I have joked about Batina have ocd,…
I remember the house next to Lucy Brown’s. She and I would drop by as we
ran around playing back in the 60’s. We’d go inside and he’d be playing
Janis Joplin on the record player. The door was always open.…Continue
