Bike Trip from Helsinki to Joensuu

Hi all,

I had been thinking about a bike trip that would take more than a day for a couple of summers. This summer seemed to open up an opportunity to do so. So I decided to ride from Helsinki, my current home town, to my place of birth, Joensuu.

The shortest route between these two cities is around 480kms. But since those roads have quite a heavy traffic they didn't suit my purposes of seeing the beautiful nature on the way. So the plan for the route was drawn via smaller… Continue

Daikon Sprouts from Seed...already!

(photo of last Spring's Daikon radish at McRorie Community Garden, by Michael Levin)

Updated with photo!

I couple of days ago at the full moon, I wrote about germinating Daikon radish seeds. They've already sprouted! Nice way to start the day. Sh'mal, I sent you an envelope full of seeds yesterday. It's August and the temperatures are already… Continue

Artist, by Lois Hudson

Artist

Chip away,

Sand rough edges, varied patterns,

Circular, angular, jagged, straight,

Peel, cut, shave, reveal

New layers waiting to be born.

Trees shine, forming

Wet green networks,

Forests of leaves,

Entanglement of branches and lives,

Creeping, nesting.

Sh'mal in Time

Sh'mal has a birthday coming up on September 8th. So, Sh'mal wrote this poem with the birthday in mind.

Sh’mal In Time

I keep finding my way, sometimes circuitous,

With each step, ahead of the other;

Sometimes carefully placed,

Many times foolhardy...

Fall Planting Full Moon

Hooray! It's a full moon tonight. And, Sh'mal tells me he's already gotten a head start on Fall planting in his garden in Seattle.

Here's what the Daikon radish looked like last year when Sh'mal first gave me his plot at McRorie Garden in Gainesville.

We collected some… Continue

Elephant In Motion

Hi Everyone,

We entered a video contest sponsored by the Washington State Bar Association titled: “Justice for All”. Sarah Jane Lapp spent months working on it totally as a project of the heart for the elephants incarcerated at Woodland Park Zoo and at all zoos.

One of the ways the winner will be chosen is by how many views it receives on YouTube....

Edna St. Vincent Millay

What Lips My Lips Have Kissed...

Edna St. Vincent Millay

What lips my lips have kissed, and where, and why,

I have forgotten, and what arms have lain

Under my head till morning; but the rain

Is full of ghosts tonight, that tap and sigh

Upon the glass and listen for reply,

And in my heart there stirs a quiet pain

For unremembered lads that not again

Will turn to me at midnight with a cry.

Thus in winter stands the lonely tree,

Nor… Continue

Death of a dearly beloved tomato plant

I loved that tomato plant. Over its way-too-short life, it yielded 3 fragrant, juicy, tangy cherry tomatoes. And for all it bestowed upon me, all I gave it was the TLC normally reserved for a beloved pet: watering, fertilizing, picking off those pesky caterpillars and dispatching them to the gates of Hades. Alas, despite its brave attempts to flourish in the direct assault of the withering rays from the unusually scorching blowtorch that is this summer's Texas sun, it finally succumbed last… Continue

Qi Gong is the Alphabet

Imagine yourself at the beautiful coast. Looking down, your view is full of things. Looking up, the view clears and becomes simpler, less busy, calmer. That’s what each movement of Qi Gong brings to you. Qi Gong brings focus. Purpose. Qi Gong eliminates what clutters your mind and body. What’s left is filled with what you’re looking for…

MOONHAVEN IN MELLOW ROSE HOME SWEET HOME

by FLASH SILVERMOON

Moonhaven is an illuminating and mystical space and I feel that this place is my home to the very core of me. It is a space so familiar yet continually offers surprises when I take the time to wander amidst the citrus groves, listen to the night call of the many Barred owls, or sit beneath the welcoming arms of the ancient Grandmother Tree.

The Grandmother Tree is a 500 + year old Live Oak that was struck and… Continue

The Vivid Man, by Bert Woodall

When George Tilley first moved to the small town in the low mountains he sometimes felt out of place, conspicuous even. But he was never anywhere near as conspicuous as the old guy George was watching cross the street.

This man would have been conspicuous at a convention of vaudevillian golfers: He was wearing polyester knit trousers of a vivid Easter-egg-yellow-on-bright-white plaid, along with an impossibly bright, saffron-yellow shirt… Continue

"Everybody wants to go green, but nobody wants to pay for it."

I hear that statement all the time. Everybody likes to talk about going green, but if it costs anything, the eyes glaze over, and the conversation is over. So is that really true?

The situation with the economy is dire. I understand. There are many people who have lost their jobs. I understand. How can I understand? I'm one of them. I was also part of a corporate lay-off earlier this year. I am divorced, so I have no other back-up income. I do understand -- more than you… Continue

Caucasian Smaucasian

by Bert Woodall

Looking for a job offers a wealth of unpleasantries and irritations but one in particular pops up every time I file an application. Specifically, I am asked to specify an ethnicity. A short list of options is presented from which I am asked to choose exactly one. Of course for me there is really just one option and I take it: I lie.

Invariably I tick the little circle beside “Caucasian” (also sometimes presented as “Caucasian, non-Hispanic”) and just as… Continue

Solar power to pressurize rain barrel water

Once you have a rain barrel, and it's collecting the water, how do you move the water to where it's needed? That's the question James Fisher from Peachtree City, GA asked himself. After hauling buckets and buckets of water to his

wife's flower gardens, he decided there must be a better way. Since he is a systems engineer by trade, he designed a solar-powered water pumping system that would pressurize the water so he could use it with his yard sprinklers and misting units. Then his… Continue
