I loved that tomato plant. Over its way-too-short life, it yielded 3 fragrant, juicy, tangy cherry tomatoes. And for all it bestowed upon me, all I gave it was the TLC normally reserved for a beloved pet: watering, fertilizing, picking off those pesky caterpillars and dispatching them to the gates of Hades. Alas, despite its brave attempts to flourish in the direct assault of the withering rays from the unusually scorching blowtorch that is this summer's Texas sun, it finally succumbed last week. O! I was excited coming home that day, hoping to discover the gift of yet another refreshing morsel from this generous friend. Imagine, dear reader, my disappointment upon discovering the heat-induced demise of my friend, my companion, the provider of that which had been sustaining me, in both body and soul. But there is hope on the horizon, my friends, for in this, my first attempt to cultivate nature's bounty, I feel I have acquired a lifetime's wealth of learning, and next year I shall return to better nurture a new chum--a new pet--a new raison d'etre...a new tomato plant!
