Dangerously organic!

Did you ever see a street person sitting in the esplanade holding a sign looking for change? Maybe the sign said something funny like "Will code for food". Did you give him some change? Was it hard to look at him if you had nothing to give? Did you have a passenger who said "I bet he makes more than you and me in a day"?

I like to think nobody wakes up and says "Boy, I think I'll go begging on the streets today and make a windfall". It's not a choice. People wind up on the streets for all sorts of reasons. Not the least of which is just running short of cash for rent. Bingo. You're homeless.

I hear my friends say "Man, if you could just organize these homeless folk, we could make some dosh." What's the prob? Well, just getting dressed when the sun comes up is the first challenge. Thinking straight is the next. It's hard on the old body to sleep rough. Remember that day you went to bed without brushing your teeth? Or, that campout where you forgot toilet paper? How about the day the sun was so bright and you didn't have any sun screen. Now, combine that with no running water. No food. No coffee. no cigs. Nothing.

It's a different mindset. Remind yourself you live in a house. He doesn't. You are settled. He's a traveler. You're stable. He is scared and life is not kind to him. Little things mean a lot. If you don't have some money to give, just nod and say hi. That counts for a lot.
